Switzerland is a landlocked country in the heart of Europe which encompasses a great diversity of landscapes, culture, and climates on a limited area of 15,940 square miles. Switzerland is surrounded by 5 countries: Austria, Liechtenstein, France, Italy, and Germany.
Not only does Switzerland embrace the strength that comes from diversity, according to a recent study from ValuePenguin, Switzerland was determined to be the safest country to visit or live. Out of 195 countries in the world, 107 supplied enough data to be ranked. The countries were ranked based on: population, CO2 emissions, life expectancy, number of national police personnel, traffic deaths, thefts, and assaults.
The splendor of the magnificent Swiss landscape has inspired poets through the ages. Switzerland offers beauty of snow-capped mountain peaks and picturesque valleys with cascading waterfalls. A few of the top attractions consist of the Matterhorn, Rhine Falls, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Lake Lucerne, and Chillon Castle.
The Matterhorn, an iconic symbol of the Swiss Alps and the tallest mountain in the Alps, is a pyramid-shaped colossus of a mountain that is very difficult to climb. The majestic, isolated mountain is said to be the “most-photographed mountain in the world” as well as the “Mountain of Mountains.”
Rhine Falls are the largest falls in Switzerland as well as the largest plain waterfall on the European continent falling from a height of approximately 75 feet and 492 feet at its widest point. The lyrical poet, Eduard Morike, was awed by the falls and wrote … “Hold your heart, oh traveler, tightly in mighty hands! Mine nearly descended, shivering with pleasure. Restless thundering masses thrown upon masses, ear and eye, whither can they save themselves in such an uproar?”
Lauterbrunnen Valley is home to 72 thundering waterfalls, including the popular Staubbach Falls, which is the highest free-falling waterfall in Europe plunging from an overhanging mountain in a single unbroken fall; the height of the cascade is between 800 and 900 feet. Lauterbrunnen means “many fountains.” In 1779, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe visited the valley, and was inspired by the roaring waters to write his well-known poem ‘Spirit Song over the Waters’.
“Spirit of man,
Thou art like unto water!
Fortune of man,
Thou art like unto wind!”
Switzerland is home to more than 1,500 lakes including Lake Lucerne. This beautiful lake and Beethoven’s famous classical sonata has captured the listener’s imagination when Ludwig Rellstab, a German music critic and poet, wrote that Beethoven’s Fantasia reminded him of the reflected moonlight off Lake Lucerne; the sonata was described as “a boat passing the wild scenery of Lake Lucerne in the moonlight” in 1836; since that time, Fantasia has been referred to as “Moonlight Sonata.”
The Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. Chillon was made popular by Lord Byron, who wrote the poem The Prisoner Of Chillon. The poem was written in 1816, and it chronicles the imprisonment of a Genevois monk, François Bonivard in 1532 who was the lone survivor of a family who has been martyred. Byron visited the castle and carved his name on a pillar in the dungeon. After touring the castle, Byron was inspired by Bonivard’s story and composed the poem.
With the world title as the safest country in the world, this European country beckons you. The peacefulness and splendor awe visitors from the moment they get a glimpse of the first mountain peaks. The Swiss landscape is a ‘harmonious tableau of beautiful images.’
