What do you say when someone asks, “What do you do?” Being prepared for the question, helps you make the best impression in your introduction without rambling. Your response needs to be clear, concise, compelling, and memorable.
An Elevator Pitch is a sweet synopsis of your background and experience or a quick overview of your company where you try to say a lot while only saying a little. It is similar to the Executive Summary in a resume. An Elevator Pitch starts the conversation with the purpose of capturing attention and sparking interest while drawing listeners in by addressing their needs. Choose words that will create the highest impact.
Memorize the key points, but the marketing message should be authentic and tailored to your audience to make a stronger connection. Jacqueline Whitmore uses the analogy of playing an instrument to pitching … “You want to memorize the melody so you can improvise variations and still sound authentic instead of rehearsed.”
When crafting your pitch, consider the following questions:
- What is your Vision?
- What does your company do? What problem do you solve?
- Who are your customers? Who do you help? Do you have a niche?
- What key benefits do you offer your customers? How do you address your prospect’s pain points?
- How do you differentiate yourself from the competition? What is your secret sauce?
Consider the following Checklist; an elevator pitch does not have to include all of these components, but it should reflect the essence of your business.
✔️ Target Consumers
✔️ Unique Selling Position (USP)
✔️ Traction [Results, Key Performance Indicator (KPI), Metric]
✔️ Call To Action (CTA)
✔️ Question [To continue the conversation]
The ideal length of the Elevator Pitch is 30 seconds which is the approximate time that it takes to ride an elevator, hence, the name. However, you can make the pitch longer or shorter depending on how much interest is piqued. Here is my short version that I am still in the process of crafting because it is a perpetual work in progress.
“Hi! I am Diana <Name> with Tirzah <Company>. I own a charming vintage <USP> venue <Product> where timeless memories <Traction> are made as families <Market> celebrate the milestones in their lives!” ?
Depending upon my audience, sometimes, I may stop after ‘timeless memories are made,’ but sometimes, my mini-commercial has a longer version …
“Hi! I am Diana with Tirzah. I own a charming vintage venue where timeless memories are made as families celebrate the milestones in their lives whether it is a wedding, birthday, graduation, shower, etc. There are so many reasons to celebrate! We are located in the heart of the Downtown Belton Historic District near the old courthouse on N. East Street <Location>. I would love to give you a tour <CTA> of our historic building sometime!!” ?
After delivering the pitch, if you are met with awkward silence, consider ending the elevator pitch with a question to keep the conversation going. If there is awkward silence after my spiel, then I may go on to say a trivial tidbit of history about the building. ?
Opportunities are everywhere, and we cannot always control when they appear so it is best to live by the Boy Scout Motto and “Be Prepared!”
